OAKLAND, CA (May 5, 2018) – Holy Names University (HNU) announces the commencement speakers for its 2018 graduation ceremonies. Rebecca Eisen, esteemed employment law attorney and chair of the board of trustees for Cal State East Bay, will speak to graduate students on Friday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m., and HNU’s Vice President for Mission Integration, Sister Carol Sellman, SNJM ’69, MM ’78, EdD, will address undergraduates during their ceremony on Saturday, May 12, at 4:30 p.m.
Rebecca Eisen is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. She earned her master's degree at San Francisco State before getting her Juris Doctor from the University of San Francisco School of Law. Ms. Eisen served as a partner in the international law firm of Morgan Lewis in its San Francisco office. In addition, Ms. Eisen has served as chair of the West Coast Wage and Hour Practice and regularly defended employers in numerous wage and hour class, multiple plaintiff, and collective actions brought under California law and the federal Fair Labor Standards Act. A regular speaker on employment law matters, she has presented before such organizations as the Northern District Judicial Conference, the Practicing Law Institute, the Northern California Human Resources Association, and The Recorder Roundtable. From 2005 through 2012, she was named one of the leading U.S. lawyers for employment law by Chambers USA. Ms. Eisen also serves as chair of the Board of the Oakland School for the Arts, a charter middle/high school for visual and performing arts students.
Sister Carol Sellman has a long, rich history with Holy Names University. She attended College of the Holy Names (now Holy Names University) as an undergraduate student. Following her sophomore year, she entered the religious order of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. After seven years of elementary school teaching in Los Gatos and Fremont, Sr. Carol returned to Holy Names College and completed her Master of Music degree in music education with a Kodály emphasis in 1978. From 1978 – 1983, she taught music to the children in grades K – 8 at St. Andrew School in Pasadena, CA, and also served as Vocation Director for the California Province.
In 1983, Sr. Carol returned to Holy Names College, where she began her current 35-year tenure in various administrative positions in residence life, enrollment management, student services, advancement, institutional research, and academic affairs. During this time, she also served as Candidate Director for the SNJMs for 10 years, and completed her EdD in Human and Organization Development at the Fielding Graduate University in 1998. Currently, she serves as the Vice President for Mission Integration, a position she has held since 1999.
On behalf of Holy Names University, Interim President Michael Groener will bestow on both Eisen and Sellman an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters.
Says Groener, “We are honored to have two extraordinary and inspiring women address our graduates this year. Both of our speakers embody Holy Names’ values by promoting a more just and equitable society and living in service to our greater community.”
