OAKLAND, CA (July 12, 2018) – Holy Names University announces the appointment of John Muccigrosso as interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. The appointment, effective July 1, is expected to last throughout the coming academic year while the University conducts a nationwide search for a permanent Academic Affairs administrator.
“Dr. John Muccigrosso, professor of classics at Drew University, has arranged for a leave of absence from Drew to join us at HNU for 2018-19,” said HNU Interim President Michael Groener. “Both his academic and administrative qualifications and experience will be helpful to us here at HNU in this interim period.”
Muccigrosso’s academic interests include Italian archaeology, Roman history, teaching Latin, and digital humanities, a field that applies digital technology to studying the humanities. His conference presentations and contributions to scholarly publications have addressed issues ranging from a database dedicated to Roman temples to digital approaches to learning Latin vocabulary.
During his tenure at Drew he has served as chair of the Department of Classics and as associate dean for the College of Liberal Arts. From 2008 to 2017, he was the director of an archaeological field school studying an ancient Roman settlement in Umbria north of Rome.
“I’m delighted to join the community at Holy Names University and look forward to working with everyone here as the institution continues its 150-year tradition of education in the service of the common good,” Muccigrosso said.
A native of Brooklyn, NY, Muccigrosso earned a dual undergraduate degree in chemistry and classics from Amherst College, an MS in chemistry from MIT and a PhD in classical studies from the University of Michigan.
Muccigrosso replaces Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Lizbeth “Beth” Martin, who served the University in multiple roles during her 12-year HNU tenure.
