Many HNU students and alumni don’t know about all the career services and resources that HNU has to offer. Douglas Phenix, assistant director and coordinator of career services, is determined to change that.
Phenix joined the career services team two years ago as a graduate assistant. He immediately embraced the value-based learning at HNU and enjoyed helping students grow professionally, helping students is something he feels called to do. After Phenix completed his master’s degree he accepted a leadership role in the career services department as an assistant director.
Along with Phenix the career services team includes Jefferson Cortave, graduate assistant, and KiKi Trujillo, social media liaison and student employee.
Phenix says he wants to support students as they transition from the classroom to a professional career, “it can be scary and intimidating to go into the workforce. I help students build confidence and stand out by showcasing who they are. I teach them how to translate their life story into a resume and cover letter and trust their unique voice.”
“It is important that students get a jump on preparing their resume early,” Phenix emphasizes. “The earlier career planning starts the better. I help student adapt the skills they learn in the classroom into career marketability after school.”
HNU alumni are also encouraged to access the University’s resources, “alumni have access to a lifetime of career services at HNU! Most universities don’t offer that” Phenix says. “Career services are life services. No matter how successful you are there is always room to grow. I help alumni refine their resume, access different career paths, and find new opportunities.”
The Career Services team is excited to announce a newly adopted platform, Handshake. Handshake is a platform that will help students find jobs, it personalizes students’ job search and helps match students with relevant opportunities. All on-campus jobs are now on Handshake. Cortave says the platform is a perfect blend of Facebook and LinkedIn. Cortave and Phenix hosted a “Navigating Handshake” workshop this fall and will host another one in the spring.
Students and alums are encouraged to take advantage of this new resource and find out more about all the career services available by emailing email@example.com, calling 510-436-1474 or simply stopping by the Career Center (Brennan 81). All students and alumni are welcome!
