Beatriz Cardenas is a freshman in the pre-nursing program at Holy Names University and the recipient of the Y. Charles & Helen C. Soda Endowed Scholarship. Cardenas is a first-generation college student with a passion for helping others. She grew up serving her community and founded a community service club in high school. Her dream is to become a nurse so she can continue to serve.
“I was attracted to HNU because it has a close-knit student body and a sincere focus on service to the community. The University is small and allows students to be heard, which is important to me. The many resources make me feel cared for. My advisor wants me to succeed and my one-on-one interaction with my advisor is genuine and allows me to connect on all levels. There is just so much to do at HNU and I intend to participate as much as possible. I intend to join clubs like Latinos Unidos because I want to embrace and share my culture with other students," said Cardenas.
"I am going to college to not only make my parents proud but also break the stigma that a person coming from a family that struggles financially cannot become a college graduate. I will have so many opportunities because I will graduate from college."
