How to Apply - Nursing Students

Read through the application instructions for each nursing program below carefully before you begin, and contact your enrollment counselor if you need any support along the way.
Apply online- Completed online application
- Completed GBSN Application (PDF)
- General education courses; 7 units of upper-division courses
- Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) score of 75%
- 3.0 GPA of college coursework; B- in math and science classes (completed within the last 5 years)
- A writing sample
- Two letters of recommendation
- A panel interview with Assistant Program Director
- Completed online application
- A current unrestricted California RN license
- Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
- Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or better
- Official Transcripts of ALL college/university coursework previously completed
- Written Personal Statement explaining who you are, what has influenced your career path so far, professional interests and where you plan to go from here (1 – 3 pages)
- One letter of recommendation (letter or completed recommendation form)
- A current unrestricted California RN license
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing with the completion of BSN
- Education (CCNE). Students who have earned an ADN, rather than a BSN, will need to complete the ADN to MSN bridge courses. These students are not eligible for the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner option.
- Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or better and a GPA of 3.0 in prior baccalaureate level nursing courses (if any)
- Completed online graduate application
- Official transcripts for ALL formal college/university coursework previously completed.
- Written personal statement
- Two recommendations from previous professors or current or previous work supervisors (letter or completed recommendation form). Recommendations may be submitted to the Admission Office at admissions@hnu.edu, or by mail:

International Students: You will need to request two copies of each transcript from each institution you attended. One copy of each transcript must be mailed in a sealed envelope directly from the institution to Holy Names University, Office of Admission. International Student Transcripts are evaluated by World Education Services (WES), a professional evaluation service.
In addition to the personal statement, applicants must include a second writing sample answering the 3 questions below:
- Please explain your perception of the role of an FNP
- Why do you want to become an FNP?
- What changes will you make in your existing schedule to make the time needed to successfully complete the work of this program? Note: The FNP National Certification exam needs to be completed upon graduation from the FNP graduate degree and certificate program.
- Completed online application
- A current unrestricted California RN license
- Master of Science in Nursing degree from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE)
- Official transcripts for ALL formal college/university coursework previously completed
- A grade point average of 3.0 in the major and any subsequent graduate work
- Written personal statement
- One letter of recommendation (letter or completed recommendation form) from previous professors or current or previous work supervisors
International Students: You will need to request 2 copies of each transcript from each institution you attended. Students admitted to a graduate program may begin during the fall, spring, or summer terms.
Doctor of Nursing Practice
- Completed online application
- A current California RN license
- Official transcripts of BSN & MSN including the dates completion (must be in a sealed envelope from the registrar of college/university)
- Two recommendations (you may send a letter or this graduate recommendation form from previous professors or work supervisors. Completed letters and forms may be submitted to admissions@hnu.edu, or by mail:

- Interview with the Program Director for the Doctor of Nursing Practice program
In your personal statement, please answer the following 4 questions:
- What motivates you to earn your DNP degree?
- What are you planning to do with your nursing career in your specialty after you complete the DNP?
- Identify one scholarly inquiry from your practice you would like to explore as part of the DNP project.
- Describe your strengths that would contribute to your success in the DNP program and in a community of inter-professional scholars.
