In this conversation, Dr. Kensa Gunter will share her experiences in the field of sport and performance psychology including her path from graduate school to private practice. She will also discuss her approach to clinical and consultation work and talk about her engagement in professional activities and organizations. Dr. Kensa K. Gunter is a licensed psychologist and a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP). She is based in Atlanta where she provides counseling and mental performance services to individual athletes, serves as the sport psychologist for various professional sport teams, and provides consultation services for different organizations.
Prior to working in private practice, Dr. Gunter worked in a university counseling center where she served as the Outreach Coordinator. She also worked in the world of college athletics serving as the clinical and sport psychology consultant for a NCAA D-I athletic department where she provided services for individual athletes and teams, consultation services for coaches and other department staff, and educational workshops and trainings. Additionally, Dr. Gunter provides lectures at national conferences on topics including, but not limited to, understanding mental health and wellness, mental skills for elite performance, cultural diversity and inclusion (particularly in sport), athlete mental health, and clinical work with athletic populations.
Dr. Gunter is committed to elevating conversations about mental health and performance and she’s an advocate for diversity and cultural inclusion. She is passionate about helping people move beyond the stigma associated with mental health, particularly those in high performance and African American communities. Dr. Gunter currently serves as the President of AASP and is the first Black woman to be elected to this position. She was also named an AASP Fellow as a member of the 2020 induction class. She is a member of Division 47 of the American Psychological Association (APA) and served as the invited speaker for the Steven R. Heyman Memorial Keynote Lecture, which is focused on diversity in sport, at the 2018 APA Convention. Dr. Gunter serves on the National Advisory Board for the Positive Coaching Alliance and she is a member of the USOPC External Mental Health Taskforce.
