Summer Programs Enliven Campus
Multiple summer programs serving youth and adults are taking place at Holy Names University this summer. “This past week the summer HNU campus was the busiest that I have witnessed in my three years here,” President William Hynes said in a letter to the campus community.

HNU to Launch New Website Next Year
Holy Names University is working with the website development firm MB/I to launch a redesigned website in spring 2014. HNU aims to create a website with a modern style, greater consistency, simplified back-end programming, user-friendly features for visitors, and a responsive layout for easy viewing on cell phones and tablets.

Williams Named Director of Alumnae/i Relations
Previously the director of annual giving, in her new role Frances Renty Williams will collaborate with HNU departments to ensure alumnae/i participation in campus activities, secure commitments from alumnae/i to provide professional expertise and service at HNU, partner with development colleagues to cultivate alumnae/i giving, and serve as a liaison between the HNU Alumnae/i Association Executive Board and campus administrators. HNU Alumni Invited to Share Accomplishments at Library
Are you an artist, musician, or published author? HNU alumni are invited to read from their publications, perform concerts, or make presentations at the library. HNU Athletics Recruits New Players
Several athletes have signed with Holy Names University including tennis players Matthew Halligan and Jonah Tahilan, soccer players Keara Ortega and Larissa Rodrigues, and softball players Danielle Santoro and Karolanne Tipton.

Alumnus Named Women’s Basketball Coach
Dave Covell will be joining HNU as the head women’s basketball coach after coaching women’s basketball at California Maritime Academy in Vallejo for nine seasons. “His coaching experience, passion for the game of basketball, and eagerness to provide a positive experience for student-athletes assures a bright future for our women’s basketball program,” Director of Athletics Dennis Jones said.

HNU Advances in the NCAA Division II Membership Process
HNU has completed another step on its path to becoming a full member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II. The NCAA recently informed Director of Athletics Dennis Jones that the University will advance from year-one candidacy to year-two candidacy.

Sophia Center Director Receives Thomas Berry Award
Director of the Sophia Center James Conlon received the Thomas Berry Great Work Award on July 18 at the Valley Center for the Performing Arts at Holy Names University. Mary Evelyn Tucker, senior lecturer and senior research scholar at Yale University and trustee of the Thomas Berry Foundation, presented the award.

Preparatory Music Department Recognized in Oakland Magazine
HNU’s Preparatory Music Department (PMD) was recognized as the Best Music Instruction for Kids in Oakland Magazine’s “Best of 2013” issue. PMD uses a combination of the Suzuki method and traditional approaches to music education. “There are many excellent music instructors in the East Bay, as well as very fine institutional programs, so I am honored that we are recognized in this way,” says PMD Director Katherine Baird.
