HNU Hosts BASAC Bi-Annual Meeting
Forty-five individuals from universities throughout Northern California attended the Bay Area Student Activities Consortium Bi-Annual Meeting hosted by Holy Names University in December. The meeting included a panel on risk management of club-sponsored events and a session exploring discrimination on college campuses.

Circle Singing Brings Music to Campus
Circle Singing Brings Music to CampusAnne Hege, who began teaching music at HNU in fall 2013, has been leading a circle sing group on campus. Circle singing is an improvisational community practice where a leader teaches short musical phrases to a group that are layered together to create a song. “It is a wonderful, casual, accessible way for people to make music together,” she says.

Historical Mural Documents HNU StoryStop by the Michael and Maureen Hester Administration Building to view HNU’s historical mural. Installed in November 2013, the mural documents Holy Names’ story from the founding of the Covent of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, to the establishment of the Oakland Hills campus, to the shift to a coeducational learning environment.

Men’s Basketball Players Visit School
Men’s Basketball Players Visit SchoolMembers of the men’s basketball team visited Allendale Elementary School to read to students and talk about the importance of education. “Being able to see our role models who can talk to (the students) about the importance of school and college and being a good participating member of society is really important,” said Rachel Amsterdam, the school’s literary coach.

Chamberlin Named HNU Softball Coach
Jennifer Chamberlin has joined HNU as head softball coach. “We are very excited to add Coach Chamberlin to our staff,” Director of Athletics Cesar Cardenas said. “Her championship background as a player and a coach is a great asset to our athletic department and the student-athletes she will be coaching.”

Women’s Basketball Defeats Chaminade
The women’s basketball team won its second-straight game in Pacific West Conference play, defeating Chaminade University 89–64 on January 18. Four HNU players scored in the double digits: Britney Machado-Potestio, Renique Fitzpatrick, Sonia Aguilar, and Garysha Youngblood.

HNU Community Invited to Join Swim Team
Are you interested in becoming a better swimmer, increasing endurance, or competing with other swimmers? HNU faculty, staff, and students are invited to join the Manatee Aquatic Masters. Although not an HNU team, practices take place on campus. “I improve my swimming through coached workouts, keep up my fitness, and am part of a group of interesting, active people,” says Ronni Parker-West, an adjunct instructor at HNU and member of the team. Ransom Takes Part in ALA Emerging Leaders Program
Ransom Takes Part in ALA Emerging Leaders ProgramLibrarian for Research and Electronic Resources Daniel Ransom participated in the kickoff session of the American Library Association Emerging Leaders program. As part of a four-person team, Ransom will be researching social media strategies for the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services.

Kodály’s Folk Archive Featured in SF Chronicle and KQED News
The San Francisco Chronicle and KQED recently featured the Kodály Center’s American Folk Song Collection, which digitally preserves folk songs. A grant provided by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation will allow the online archive to double in size to more than 700 songs. Check out the American Folk Song Collection here.

Students Participate in MLK Day of ServiceFive HNU students, accompanied by Assistant Director of the Center for Social Justice and Civic Engagement Javier De Paz and Graduate Student Assistant Maribel Lopez, participated in the Dr. Martin Luther King Day of Service. “The camaraderie of working with the other volunteers was amazing,” said Michelle Morgan, a senior.
