HNU Celebrates Founders’ Day and Honors Faculty and StaffOn Wednesday, April 29, the campus community celebrated Founders’ Day, the anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary in Oakland. As is customary on Founders’ Day, several of the Sisters served strawberry shortcake to attendees—a tradition that arose from the fact that when the Sisters arrived to the Bay Area in 1868, the Sisters of Mercy served them strawberries and cream as refreshment.

HNU Students Discuss Trip to Tutwiler, MS, and Habitat for Humanity WorkFor the 11th year, HNU students traveled with faculty and staff to Tutwiler, Mississippi, to work with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a community resident. About 39 percent of Tutwiler’s population lives below the poverty line. Most residents of Tutwiler do not have easy access to educational facilities, employment opportunities, and health care.

Gina Snyder, business etiquette trainer and career counselor, led the event and instructed attendees on the finer points of networking, small talk, and proper dining etiquette.

<em>Between the Lines</em> Launches Second IssueOn Monday, April 13, Between the Lines, HNU’s online literary journal, held a celebration for the launch of its second issue. HNU Writer-In-Residence Belo Cipriani serves as the editor-in-chief of Between the Lines, which publishes poetry and creative non-fiction that focuses on themes of social justice.

An Interview with HNU Professor Perri Franskoviak
Perri Franskoviak, PhD, is a licensed clinical psychologist and has been teaching at HNU for three years. Prior to HNU she taught part time at several universities in the Bay Area and also ran a mental health/substance misuse program in the Tenderloin. Franskoviak recently sat down with Julaine Folwin, PhD, instructional designer within HNU's Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, for a conversation about her career and her teaching.

HNU Senior Creates Profiles of Hope Campaign to Highlight Survivors of Sexual AssaultMadeleine Horn, an HNU senior and psychology major, established Profiles of Hope, a campaign designed to tell the stories of survivors of sexual assault through videos and photos. The campaign currently includes profiles of nine women, all of whom chose to share their stories of survival for the benefit of others.

Writer-In-Residence Belo Cipriani Named Grand Marshal for SF Pride Parade
HNU’s Writer-In-Residence Belo Cipriani has been named as one of the community grand marshals for the 45th San Francisco Pride parade. Cipriani was nominated in February and has been named to the position by the San Francisco Pride Board of Directors.

Faculty Members Publish Papers on the May 21, 2011 Judgment Day Movement
Charles Sarno, PhD, associate professor of sociology, and Helen Shoemaker, PhD, associate professor of counseling psychology, collaborated on two papers about the May 21, 2011 Judgment Day movement, which was led by Christian radio evangelist Harold Camping. Camping, who at the time controlled a 65-station radio network, publicized the movement through his live radio program called The Open Forum.

President’s Circle Luncheon Honors Sisters and DonorsHNU held its inaugural President’s Circle Luncheon on Tuesday, April 21, to honor members of the President’s Circle and to recognize the contributions of HNU’s Sisters. Attendees included alumni, Sisters, friends, faculty, staff, and students. The President’s Circle is an honor society that recognizes an esteemed group of HNU supporters who generously give more than $1,000 to an HNU fund in a single fiscal year.

HNU Announces the Hiring of New Soccer Coach Sean McMannis
HNU Announces the Hiring of New Soccer Coach Sean McMannisHoly Names University announces the hiring of Sean McMannis as its new head coach for men’s and women’s soccer. McMannis comes to HNU after previously having served as head women’s soccer coach at Bethany College in Kansas since July 2011. A former collegiate athlete, McMannis was the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Women’s Coach of the Year in 2013. He also helped the team to a second place finish in the conference.

HNU Men's Tennis Moves Up Seven Spots to #34 Nationally
On Wednesday, April 29, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its NCAA Division II national rankings. The Holy Names University men's tennis team moved seven places up from #41 to #34.

Beblie, Halligan, and Martinez Named to 2015 All-PacWest Men's Tennis Team
On Friday, May 1, the Pacific West Conference announced its 2015 postseason honors for men's tennis. From Holy Names University, three Hawks were named to the 2015 All-PacWest Team: Tracy Beblie, Matthew Halligan, and Rafael Martinez.
