Homecoming Events Kickoff Tonight
Homecoming 2013 events kickoff Wednesday, October 2 with an inspirational speech by Julie V. Vilardi, executive director of strategic projects and clinical informatics at Kaiser Permanente. Alumni are invited to join faculty and staff for a wine and hors d’oeuvres reception on Friday, October 4, followed by the 40th Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony. Raskob Partners with Children’s Hospital
The Raskob Learning Institute and Day School has hosted more than 20 pediatric residents since June in an ongoing partnership with Children’s Hospital and Research Center Oakland. In groups of two or three, the residents have toured Raskob, and learned about challenges faced by children with learning disabilities.

Launch of Nursing Simulation Center
Holy Names University’s Department of Nursing unveiled its state-of-the-art Nursing Simulation Center at a launch party on September 16. The center, which will provide training to about 200 nursing students annually, supports “close-to-reality” teaching strategies that promote critical learning skills. Summer Upgrades to HNU Facilities
Campus Services recently undertook a variety of facility improvement projects to enhance the comfort of our students, ensure the safety of campus constituents, and reduce use of limited resources. Projects included creating additional classroom space, upgrading washers and dryers in residence halls, and landscaping.

Robinson Joins HNU Athletics
Dante Robinson, a Hercules native and Salesian High School graduate has joined the HNU men’s basketball team. The 6'6" forward is an incoming freshman and business management major. At Salesian High School, he played on multiple championship teams, including the 2011–2012 state championship squad.

Hawks Sign Alameda Standout Harold Perry Jr.
The men’s basketball team has signed 6'6" forward Harold Perry Jr. from the College of Alameda. “I just want everyone at Holy Names to know that I’m excited to be a part of the Hawk family and can’t wait to help the program accomplish more,” says Perry, a Californian native and John Swett High School graduate.

Gallo Receives $350,000 Research Grant
Dr. Carina Gallo, assistant professor of criminology at HNU, and Professor Kerstin Svensson of Lund University have received a $350,000 research grant from the Swedish Crime Victim Fund. The grant will support their research into the rise and evolution of the Swedish Association for Victim Support.

Retreat Inspires Reflection and Relationship Building
A retreat at Camp Holy Names at Villa Maria del Mar in Santa Cruz, California, brought together 15 employees entering their third year of employment, six Sisters, and three lay faculty and staff members who helped organize the weekend. The retreat provided opportunities for participants to interact with other faculty and staff, explore how their work relates to the HNU community, and learn about the spirit and values of the Sisters of the Holy Names. Alumna Profile: Angela Pirrone Sandri ’63
Angela Pirrone Sandri, who celebrates her 50th reunion this fall, lives in Bainbridge Island, Washington. Since graduating from Holy Names in 1963, she has taught high school, raised four kids, lived abroad, and ran a travel agency.
