New Students Participate in Orientation
From academic meetings to dining with family and friends to the rite of passage, the HNU campus had been livened by orientation activities for new students. Upgraded Library Services Available to Students
The Paul J. Cushing Library has made a number of improvements to better support student learning, including longer library hours, laptop and iPad checkouts, live chat librarian research assistance, and additional seating and study space.

HNU Retirement Party for Guide Dog Madge
The HNU community gathered on August 15 to honor the service of guide dog Madge, who has been a faithful companion to the University’s Writer-in-Residence Belo Cipriani for six years. Madge will spend retirement on a 30-acre property in Minnesota in the company of Cipriani’s sister, Emily, and Emily’s dog, Buddy. HNU Retirement Party for Guide Dog Madge

Cardenas to Serve as New Athletic Director
Cesar Cardenas is well aware of the strength of HNU Athletics, and he now has the chance to lead the Hawks into the future. Cardenas was officially introduced August 19 as the new director of athletics at Holy Names University. He previously served as HNU’s associate director of athletics.

Oliver Joins HNU as Women’s Volleyball Coach
An accomplished volleyball player and coach, Allison Oliver comes to HNU from Whittier College, where she served as the head women’s volleyball coach for six seasons. She began coaching in 1997 for the Huntington Beach Volleyball Club, and has coached for a variety of recreation leagues and schools since then.

Perez to Lead Women’s Golf Team
Instructing women in the game of golf has been a cornerstone of his professional career, says Bruce Perez, the new head coach of the women’s golf team. Perez is a PGA Class A professional who currently works at Sequoyah Country Club, one of the most prestigious clubs in the Bay Area.

Mall Named Men’s Volleyball Coach
Bryan Mall joins HNU as the head coach of men’s volleyball with more than 22 years experience in the sport. In addition to coaching for many years, he played varsity volleyball at Liberty High School in Brentwood, in the Marine Corps for the local base team, and then at Los Medanos College and San Francisco State University, earning all-league honors.

Kodály Program Receives $75,000 Grant
The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation has granted Holy Names University $75,000. The funds will be used to update the Kodály Center for Music Education’s folk song website—the only website with recordings of traditional folk songs and their transcriptions.

Students Visit Santa Rita Jail
Students enrolled in the Criminal Justice System course, taught by Assistant Professor Carina Gallo, visited Santa Rita Jail this spring. The facility houses approximately 4,000 inmates, and is the third largest jail in California and the fifth largest in the nation. Students Visit Santa Rita Jail
