HNU Welcomes New Students and Families to Campus for OrientationHoly Names University welcomed more than 140 new students and their families for move-in and the beginning of orientation weekend on Saturday, August 20. It was a beautiful, sunny weekend that included a number of events planned for incoming students and their families, notably the Rite of Passage ceremony, dinner with HNU Interim President Jeanie Watson, PhD, dessert with the Sisters, a school-spirit rally, academic workshops, a welcome Mass in McLean Chapel, and small-group orientation sessions.

HNU to Provide Housing to UC Berkeley Students
HNU will provide housing to approximately 50 UC Berkeley students for the duration of the 2016–2017 academic year. The UC Berkeley students will live on the HNU campus in Feehan Hall and on separate floors from HNU students, though they will share common area space with HNU students.

Campus Art Show Highlights Student Work
Campus Art Show Highlights Student WorkSeveral HNU students who took classes this past spring with Anya Zinoveva, HNU instructor of communication studies, had work chosen for a student art show that has been exhibited around campus over the summer. The student work selected for the art show has been exhibited on the display televisions located in Brennan Hall, Cushing Library, and the Public Market.

In Memoriam: Jim Kelly, Former Member of the HNU Board of Trustees
In Memoriam: Jim Kelly, Former Member of the HNU Board of TrusteesFormer member of the HNU Board of Trustees Jim Kelly passed away on August 31. Kelly was a member of the HNU Board of Regents from 1981 until 2000, when the Board of Regents ceased to exist. Kelly was appointed to the HNU Board of Trustees in 1994 and served in that capacity for the University until 2014. He and his wife, Rosaleen Kelly ’55, received the Durocher Award in 2010, and he was awarded an honorary degree from HNU in 2014. Kelly was a loyal and generous donor to the University, and the entire HNU community is indebted to him for his service and dedication. Sr. Cynthia Canning presented Kelly with the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Humane Letters at HNU's Commencement ceremonies in 2014, and you can read her remarks here. Kelly's official obituary ran in Bay Area newspapers on September 4.

New Students Participate in Community Service Projects in OaklandAs part of HNU's orientation program for new students, the Center for Social Justice and Civic Engagement at HNU coordinated four community service activities with local partners. Students were invited to volunteer at Alameda County Community Food Bank, Acta Non Verba Youth Urban Farm Project, International Community Elementary School, or Oakland Catholic Worker, all of which are located in Oakland.

Carina Gallo, PhD, Contributes Chapter to <em>Reconceptualizing Critical Victimology</em>Carina Gallo, PhD, assistant professor of criminology at HNU, has contributed a chapter, entitled "Punishment or solidarity: Comparing the U.S. and Swedish victim movements," to Reconceptualizing Critical Victimology: Interventions and Possibilities. Gallo co-authored the chapter with Robert Elias, PhD, professor of politics at the University of San Francisco. The book, edited by Dale C. Spencer and Sandra Walklate, collects 11 papers by leading scholars in fields related to victims and victimology.

HNU Women's Volleyball Will Play First NCAA Division II Home Game for HNU
HNU Women’s Volleyball Will Play First NCAA Division II Home Game for HNUWhen the HNU women's volleyball team traveled to Belmont, California, to square off against Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU) on Friday, September 2, it was the first athletic contest for HNU as an active member of NCAA Division II. The team battled hard but lost those initial matches. However, HNU Athletics will have its first home game as an NCAA Division II member on Saturday, September 17, when the women's volleyball team hosts NDNU in Tobin Gym. Come out to cheer on the Hawks on this historic occasion!

Trina Slapeka Named Head Coach for Men's and Women's Tennis
Trina Slapeka was named head coach for the Holy Names University men's and women's tennis teams in summer 2016. Slapeka, a native of Jurmala, Latvia, initially joined Holy Names University as the men's and women's tennis graduate assistant. Slapeka served in the GA role for four years with men's tennis and five years with women's tennis, while completing her master's degree in business at HNU in May 2016.

21 HNU Student-Athletes Named D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award Winners
The week of August 15, the Division 2 Athletics Directors Association (D2 ADA) revealed the student-athletes awarded the organization's 2015-16 Academic Achievement Awards. With over 8,000 student-athletes awarded nationally, 21 were from Holy Names University.

HNU Donor Spotlight: Judy Nguyen ’99
HNU Donor Spotlight: Judy Nguyen ’99Longtime HNU donor Judy Nguyen graduated from the University with bachelor's degrees in English and Religious Studies in 1999, and she earned her master's in divinity at Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, California. Nguyen is a teaching and learning consultant for All Covered, IT Services from Konica Minolta, which has locations throughout the Bay Area. In her job, Nguyen helps schools fulfill their educational mission via technology. She generously agreed to answer questions about her HNU experience, her journey to HNU, and her reasons for giving back to the University.
