The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. (Luke 4)
Holy Names University, like many other entities, has a “mission statement”. This allows us to state who we are and then to check ourselves from time to time to see if we truly are living out our mission.
In today’s gospel Jesus gives us his mission statement. But this is not the mission of Jesus alone! As the baptized, this becomes our mission statement as well. So, how are we doing? Do we believe that each of us has been anointed and filled with the Spirit? Are we sharing joy and gladness? Proclaiming freedom? Helping other to see and be free? We here at Holy Names are committed to ‘radical hospitality”. What are the ways we will live out the mission “to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord” on our campus, in our residence halls, with our family and friends, and with those most in need?
