HNU Transfer FAQs

We’ve compiled answers to frequently asked questions regarding the closure of Holy Names University and the student transfer process.  We will continue to update these FAQs regularly as more information becomes available.

GENERAL FAQs
  1. How will HNU support my transfer process?

HNU has a Transfer Taskforce, a team focused on providing students an understanding of institutional agreements, general transfer support, hosting transfer info sessions, and 1-1 advising.

  2. Should I stay enrolled at HNU this spring?  Yes! We want to help you continue on your academic path forward. Even if you are not graduating this spring, we encourage you to stay at HNU so we can support you through this transition. HNU will offer transfer planning meetings and info sessions with skilled academic advisors. We are finalizing special transfer agreements with multiple institutions that will support a smooth transfer and may include benefits such as waived application requirements and fees and extended deadlines.
  3. Will I still be eligible for transfer agreements if I did not enroll in Spring 2023 classes at HNU?

Yes. You will be able to take advantage of transfer agreement benefits if you’ve attended HNU within the last 365 days. Please contact the institution you plan to transfer to directly to coordinate.
  4. Where can I find info explaining HNU’s closure? https://hnu.edu/hnu-closure-faq/
ACADEMIC FAQs
  1. What happens to the credits I have taken at HNU? All college-level credits earned at HNU are valid even after the University has closed. They are considered regionally accredited and will be considered for transfer by any other regionally accredited institution. Note: MATH A, C, R are not college-level credits.
  2. Will other universities accept HNU credits?  The institution you transfer to will determine which HNU credits are accepted. HNU is developing transfer agreements with other institutions to help students make a smooth transition and complete their degrees.
  3. What about Incomplete (I) or In Progress (IP) coursework?  Students need to complete all coursework requirements by the end of Spring 2023. Please contact the appropriate faculty member to ensure you submit all outstanding assignments before final grades are assigned. Academic advising can assist with determining the best course of action for your particular situation
  4. What if the school I plan to transfer to does not accept some of my HNU coursework? HNU has transfer agreements in place to support the smooth transfer of your coursework to a new institution. If some of your coursework is denied transfer, we recommend you petition the institution for transfer credit through their established procedures.
  5. What if I am not in good standing at HNU?  Most schools will require you to be in good academic standing to transfer to their institution (good standing = cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher). If you are not in good standing, you may consider taking courses at a community college to improve your GPA. Please reach out directly to the transfer institution of your choice to learn more about your options.

Students will always be able to secure an official transcript. Once records are transferred to the custodian, information about ordering transcripts will be updated. Until then, please request transcripts as usual.

  3. Can HNU send my other college (non-HNU) transcriptsNo. You will need to submit official transcripts from all colleges to your future transfer school.
  4. What is the difference between official and unofficial transcripts?  An “unofficial transcript” can be downloaded or printed by the student and sent to the institution or organization requesting it. Unofficial transcripts can be used during preliminary communication between students and school.  HNU students can find unofficial transcripts in MyCampus under Progress. Transferring institutions will eventually ask a student to request an “official transcript,” which is a transcript that is provided from HNU directly to the requestor, such as transferring institution, an employer or graduate school. An official transcript has the university’s seal and Registrar’s signature.
GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Articulation Agreement: Course-by-course evaluation of courses taken at HNU. Colleges and universities that you will be transferring to will review each course taken at HNU and will attempt to match it with a course or requirement at their college or university.

Accessibility: Requiring accommodation for a disability, physical or otherwise.

Custodian of Records: When a university closes, they make an agreement with another university to be the “Custodian of Records.” This means this new university will keep all student files and records (such as transcripts, degrees awarded, etc.) once HNU closes.

Golden Four Requirements: Oral Communication, Math, English, Critical Thinking – the four basic pillars of General Education (GE) requirements. Often a requirement for CSU’s.

MOU: “Memorandum of Understanding” or an agreement between two schools, which outlines the transfer process for students.

No Residency Requirement: Universities typically have a minimum number of units required to be taken at that institution, regardless of units transferred in. A university stating, they will waive the residency requirement will not hold students to this policy. However, students may need to meet other requirements for graduation.

Regionally Accredited: HNU is a Regionally Accredited university through WSCUC, which means HNU’s credits will transfer to another institution that is also accredited. When looking at another university, make sure the university is accredited by a respected accrediting agency so that your units will transfer and your degree will be respected by future graduate schools and employers.

Prerequisites: A class that must be completed (sometimes with a minimum grade requirement) before another class can be taken.

Unofficial vs official Transcripts: An “unofficial transcript” can be downloaded or printed by the student and sent to the institution or organization requesting it.

COURSE SYLLABI: HOW TO ACCESS

Transfer institutions may request additional information on coursework you completed at HNU to see what credits will transfer. We recommend you download and save syllabi from all the courses you have taken here at HNU.

How do I download my course syllabi?

HNU students may access archived course syllabi through Canvas.

Step 1: Enroll in the Syllabi Collection for Transfer Portal course in Canvas: https://hnu.instructure.com/enroll/3M37LW. You will need to enroll in the course using your hnu.edu email address.

Step 2: Read instructions on course page. The archive is arranged chronologically by year, then by term. Please keep in mind that this archive might not have every syllabi, but the goal was to provide as many as possible.

Why should I download my course syllabi?

Schools that you are applying to need information from your HNU courses to see what credits will transfer. Many schools use course descriptions to do this. Sometimes course equivalencies are denied because there is not enough information in the course description. In order to prepare to transfer, make sure to download and save syllabi from all the courses you have taken here at HNU as we cannot guarantee access to Canvas once the school closes.
